Canebrake Rattlesnake ~ Crotalus horridus

Species: horridus

Adult body length: 36 - 60 inches

Body length at birth: 11 - 16 inches

Breeding period: April - August

Young per year: 15 - 17 young per year

Typical foods: mainly rodents and birds

Habitat: grassy areas, wooded land, swamps

Can be found: from New Hampshire, south to Florida, west to Texas, then north to Indiana

Short description: broad Headed, triangular head, stout, keeled scales, rattle on tail, vertical pupils

General description:

The Canebrake Rattlesnake is a Venomous snake. It

is the sub species of the Timber Rattlesnake. They

look almost the same but the Canebrake Rattlesnake

is lighter in color. The Canebrake is normally light

gray to a tannish color. They have dark brown or reddish

colored blotched bands going down their back. Going

down the center of its back is a mud colored or rusted

color stripe. Their tail is normal a dark color and, like

all rattlesnakes, has a rattle.

  

The First three pictures below is of a Canebrake Rattlesnake found crawling across my drive way.
