Adult body length: 18 to 38 inches

Body length at birth: 8 to 10 inches

Breeding period: June - July

Young per year: 5 - 20 young per year

Typical foods: Insects, frogs, lizards, and fish

Habitat: dry grassland near water sourse

Can be found: Eastern United States, and some parts of Western United States

Short description: medium headed, rounded head, slender, rounded pupils

General description:

The Checkered Garter Snake is a non-venomous snake. The

snake normally has a tan, brown, or olive coloring, with a light

stripe going down the center of its back. On each side it has a

checkered pattern. This snake is active during the day. On hot 

summer days this snake will normally hunt in the evening.
